چکیده

The impact of gnawing by Microcavia australis on the survival of Geoffroea decorticans plants was studied in the Monte Desert of Argentina. Sampled ( ) plants N s 105 were selected randomly from two different colonies of M. australis. For each plant sampled the following properties were measured: the diameter of the trunk at ground level; the distance to the nearest burrow of M. australis; the proportion of the trunk perimeter that had been gnawed; and the condition of the plants. It was found that gnawing by M. australis has a negative impact on the survival of G. decorticans plants. Damage of the plants . ( is inversely related to the distance from the burrow systems r s y0 283, s . . ) ( p 0 003 and to the proportion of the trunk perimeter gnawed r s y0 554, s . ) p 0 0001 . The differential survival of plants with a larger diameter trunk and of plants farther away from M. australis colonies may have long-term effects on the abundance and distribution of G. decorticans.

ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND ACUTE TOXICITY OF CHAÑAR FRUITS (Geoffroea decorticans)

INTRODUCTION Studies of the medical folklore of Northwestern Argentina are of great ethnomedicine value. The fruits of Geoffroea decorticans (Fabaceae) are used for both culinary and medical purpose (1). The aim of the present work was determined the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of extracts of chañar fruits. It was investigated the possible toxic effect on rats.

The Native Fruit Geoffroea decorticans from Arid Northern Chile: Phenolic Composition, Antioxidant Activities and In Vitro Inhibition of Pro-Inflammatory and Metabolic Syndrome-Associated Enzymes.

The native tree Geoffroea decorticans (chañar) grows in the arid lands of northern Chile. It has been used as a food plant since prehistoric times. Phenolic-enriched extracts (PEEs) of Chilean chañar fruits were assessed for their chemical composition, antioxidant properties and inhibition of pro-inflammatory and metabolic syndrome-associated enzymes. Phenolic profiles were determined by HPLC-D...

Anti-inflammatory Activity and Antioxidant Potential of Aqueous Extracts from Stem Bark of Geoffroea decorticans

In the present work we investigated, for the first time, the anti-inflammatory activity and the antioxidant properties of aqueous and ethanolic extracts, obtained from stem bark of Geoffroea decorticans (Gill. ex Hook. et Arn.) Burk. (Fabaceae). G. decorticans, commonly known as “chañar” or “chañarcillo”, is a traditional argentinean plant used as emollient, balsamic, antitussive, expectorant a...

Effect of herbivorous rodents (cavies and tuco-tucos) on a shrub community in the Monte Desert, Argentina

The importance of tuco-tucos (Ctenomys eremophilus) and cavies (Microcavia australis) as herbivores in the Monte Desert was assessed on a creosotebush community dominated by Larrea cuneifolia. Herbivory by tuco-tucos or cavies affected 35% of the total plants. The most highly damaged plant species was Atriplex lampa, followed by Larrea cuneifolia and Lycium sp. The level of damage caused by Cte...

Rodents of the Subfamily Caviinae (hystricognathi, Caviidae) as Hosts for Hard Ticks (acari: Ixodidae)

There are only 33 records of rodents of the subfamily Caviinae Fischer de Waldheim, 1817 (Hystricognathi: Caviidae) infested by hard ticks in South America, where the subfamily is established. Caviinae is formed by three genera: Cavia Pallas, 1766, Galea Meyen, 1833 and Microcavia Gervais and Ameghino, 1880. Records of Amblyomma pictum Neumann, 1906, A. dissimile Koch, 1844 and A. pseudoparvum ...
